"Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia 2018 boasts a sumptuous structure and a bright straw yellow " comments the winemaker of the estate Olga Fusari: "This vintage, which started with rains but ended in the sun, was characterized by a prolonged and slightly late harvest, that we find in the notes of exotic fruit, alongside those typical of white flesh peach and a delicate vanilla. The entry into the mouth is wide, soft and the wine shows great richness and marked flavor, for a fresh and persistent finish " .
After a hot vintage like 2017, 2018 with its cold winter months and heavy rains in spring, came as an invigorating balm. From July the magic of the Mediterranean microclimate came into action and gave sunny and dry days. The cool September nights followed which allowed the vines to recover and preserve aromas and acidity. Thanks to the optimal climate, the Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier harvest that started on August 16th lasted until mid-September. Subsequently, between 17 and 25 September, the bunches of Vermentino were brought to the cellar.
To obtain such elegant and complex wines typical of the Ornellaia style, the raw material is essential, but attention and techniques in the cellar during winemaking and aging cannot be missing. The grapes, first selected in the vineyard and then in the cellar, are softly pressed and the musts obtained are placed partly in new and used barrels, partly in steel and in concrete vats. The maturation of six months on the fine lees is cadenced by batonnage, an important passage for whites in Ornellaia. Finally, every single batch is tasted and calibrated for the final blend, which once in the bottle will be refined for a year. “Our Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia is an expressive and enjoyable complexity wine from the moment it is put on the market. explains Axel Heinz, Director of the estate - But this does not mean it is obvious: its great richness and flavor, typical qualities of the Tuscan coast, give it depth and a good ability to withstand the test of time " .
Whether drunk within the year or more calmly, Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia offers the sun of its land in the glass, to which it owes its unmistakable Mediterranean character. The unique microclimate of the estate, an authentic gift of nature, translates into a juicy and rich white, with a tangible liveliness and acidic vein, caressed and nourished in the vineyard by the sea wind that blows on the Tuscan coast.
The name ORNELLAIA evokes oenological excellence and interprets the authentic expression of Tuscan beauty. The estate is located on the Tuscan coast, a few steps from the medieval village of Bolgheri and the famous Viale dei Cipressi. The range sees Ornellaia Bolgheri DOC Superiore and Ornellaia Bianco at the top. The range of reds is completed by the “second vin” Le Serre Nuove Ornellaia, Le Volte dell'Ornellaia and Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia for the white grape varieties. The constant work of the team and the optimal microclimatic and geological conditions have brought in just over thirty years - 1985 was the first year of Ornellaia - the wines of the estate to great success with both Italian and international audiences and critics.
