In the aftermath of the choice of Ireland, which obtained from the EU the right to carry forward the bill on the so-called "health warnings" or health notices that can be placed on wine labels indicating the dangers of the product, similarly to what happens for cigarettes, there were many national reactions against the measure.
In addition to stigmatizing the evident injury of the equal application to all EU members of the principles of the single market, guaranteed by the CMO, it is underlined by many as a product historically recognized as an integral part of the Mediterranean diet and of millenary tradition, treated in the same way as tobacco, without however differentiating between the quantities and methods of consumption.
The ideological approach, a priori against consumption, without distinction between conscious consumption and abuse, risks creating a dangerous precedent for one of the excellent Made in Italy products, which has a turnover of around 14 billion euros, half of which the preserve of exports.
"It is evident that this forcing of the European legislation, which questions the principles of the single European market and places the wine product indiscriminately in the dock, creates serious problems for the sector" affirms the President of the Consorzio Vini del Trentino sen. Peter Patton. " To state in general that wine is bad for you is wrong and misleading, when nutritionists agree in advising conscious and moderate consumption of the drink as an integral component of the healthy Mediterranean diet. Education in conscious drinking and a correct approach to consumption are the way to go, certainly not prohibitionist measures" continues the President.
The Consorzio Vini del Trentino therefore stands firmly against the Irish choice and invites all the various stakeholders in the world of wine to join together to launch an appeal at all levels to avoid the application of a measure which would risk irreparably damaging production Italian and European winemaking.
