The OIV (International Organization of Vine and Wine) organized with the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), at its headquarters in Rome, the conference " The genetic resources of the vine: conserving the past to guarantee the future " and chose Masi Agricola as its sole case history . For the Veronese winery it was the first opportunity to present itself in a highly prestigious international context after being called, by the OIV itself, to represent Italy in the "Consortium" , a restricted technical commission that contributes to research in the vine sector and of wine and its diffusion - in addition to Masi (Italy): Viña Concha y Toro (Chile), Moët Hennessy (France), Sogrape (Portugal), Familia Torres (Spain) and Yalumba Family Winemakers (Australia). The Conference saw the participation of experts and leading authorities in the international oenological and scientific world gathered to underline the importance of biodiversity in viticulture - with a priceless treasure of over 6000 varieties and clones - and its defense to ensure a sustainable future , that preserves the originality of the viticultural landscapes and the unique experience of wine.
Masi - with its Technical Group - has always dealt with viticultural biodiversity, with particular attention to the varieties of the Veneto, in collaboration with Universities and Research Centres. The results have been presented in international contexts, in the decades-long Technical Seminars at Vinitaly and published in both scientific and technical dissemination environments. In this case, the presentation to the FAO was entrusted to Alessandro Boscaini, eighth generation of the family that owns Masi and Roberta Beber, agronomist member of the Technical Group . The case history concerned the ancient Oseleta variety, a Veronese grape saved from oblivion thanks to Masi's commitment after decades of non-use due to its low production and late ripening and now included in the production specifications; and also Garganega , the main variety of Soave and Tuscan Vermentino . They were offered for tasting through prestigious company productions: Osar , 100% Oseleta, Colbaraca , 100% Garganega and Bellovile, 100% Vermentino.
The meeting was part of the Tenth Session of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture under the aegis of the FAO - United Nations Organization - and represented here by the Secretary Dr. Kent Nnadozie and the Technical Officer Mario Marino. Both underlined the importance of the conservation of genetic resources for the future of viticultural agriculture. President Luigi Moio was present for the OIV, Jean-Claude Ruf, Scientific Director, and Luigi Bavaresco, Professor of Viticulture at the Catholic University of Piacenza, spoke, introducing the topic of varieties resistant to diseases and climate change.
On this occasion, ITGRFA (International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture) and OIV signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate in the preservation of the viticultural genetic heritage and Masi is proud to have actively participated.
