Wine as a cultural and spiritual symbol at the center of a dialogue between religions, history and identity.

On Monday 26 May 2025, at 10:00 am, Palazzo Valentini in Rome will host the meeting “Divine Spirit: historical, religious and anthropological itineraries”, promoted by Iter Vitis – Cultural Itinerary of the Council of Europe – in collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, with the participation of the Municipality of Rome Capital. Wine, which has always been full of symbolic values, will be the protagonist of a choral reflection on its meaning in religious cultures, spiritual rites and identity traditions: a journey between the sacred and the profane that tells of it as a cultural and spiritual symbol, capable of generating dialogue between different civilizations and faiths. The proceedings will open with institutional greetings from Sabrina Alfonsi, Councilor for Agriculture, Environment and Waste Cycle of Rome Capital, and Dario Nanni, President of the Jubilee Commission of Rome Capital.

The programme of interventions offers a mosaic of authoritative voices from the academic and religious world:

Marcella Pisani (University of Rome Tor Vergata) – Dionysus, wine, the city

Ernesto Di Renzo (University of Rome Tor Vergata) – Images and imagination of the   wine between sacred and profane

Mons. Vittorio Gepponi (Diocese of Perugia) – Wine in theology and ritual   Eucharistic of the Catholic Church

David Palterer (Academy of the Arts of Drawing of Florence) – The spiritual meaning   of the Kiddush cup in Judaism

Davide Rosso (Fondazione Centro Culturale Valdese) – From the chalice to the Reformation: paths of faith and exile in the 17th and 18th centuries

A representative of the Orthodox Church will report on The Chalice in the Divine Liturgy   Byzantine: iconography, mysticism and community practice

The morning will end with a symbolic toast, proposed by Cantina Villa Gianna, to seal the message of sharing that the initiative intends to convey.

The meeting will be moderated by Emanuela Panke, President of Iter Vitis, who states: “Wine is a red thread that runs through the centuries and cultures: an element that unites, that tells of spirituality, memory and relationships. With Divino Spirito we want to enhance its role as a common cultural heritage of identity.”

Free admission until seats are taken.
