In these days in Brussels the so-called Trilogue - Commission, Council and Parliament - is trying to reach an agreement on the reform of the CAP, the Community agricultural policy. The definition of the important dossier, based on the opinion of Confagricoltura Piemonte "must not ignore the satisfaction of three fundamental principles: market stability, income protection and business efficiency". The president of Confagricoltura Piemonte Enrico Allasia wrote a letter to the MEPs elected in the district of north-western Italy to express the organization's perplexities regarding the hypothesis of reducing, for questionable reasons of equity, the basic payments to farms of larger size and with an entrepreneurial vocation. Based on the Confagricoltura simulation, if the new approach under discussion prevailed, the more structured and market-oriented companies would suffer a decrease in community transfers, compared to the current programming, very high already starting from 2023 and by over 50% (but in some cases even more) from 2026 onwards. "The advantages of this operation - underlines Allasia - according to the results of our simulation, however, would produce very marginal positive effects for small businesses". Confagricoltura believes that the agreement must not be reached at all costs, without taking into account the consequences for businesses, if the agricultural policy of the European Union is to continue to support an economic process aimed at providing consumers with safe, quality food. and adequate quantities. "The challenge we set ourselves - concludes Allasia - is to achieve, thanks to scientific research, greater environmental sustainability, consolidating production levels. All this can happen, as it has been in the past, only by enhancing a system of efficient and competitive companies. ".
