CLASSIC METHOD MATTIA VEZZOLA TURNS 50: A PASSION FOR THE PERFECT SPARKLING WHICH HAS LASTED FOR HALF A CENTURY

Mattia Vezzola, visionary and passionate winemaker, celebrates the anniversary of his Classic Method, elegant and with an ancient flavor but with a look towards the future

2023 is a special year for the famous winemaker Mattia Vezzola, father of the Classic Method of the same name, as well as patron of the Costaripa winery located in the heart of Valtenesi, in fact the 50th anniversary of his line of "Mattia Vezzola Classic Method" is being celebrated. "50 years that I love them" , is the claim that will be represented on the celebratory bottles of the 2023 vintage. And the philosophy that underlies Mattia Vezzola's Classic Method is contained in these few words: not just a wine but a extension of the personality of the great professional of contemporary enology and of his passion for bubbles and for what they represent: the pleasure of life, elegance and sharing. " The natural effervescence has always given me the pleasant sensation of mystery and the conviction of magic in observing the tiny pearls floating free ." Mattia Vezzola says, "I have always liked to go beyond the rational imagination to transform the wine project into the light dream of authentic craftsmanship. I toast to life, with a very small and happy bubble that reaches the heart." As a child Mattia Vezzola dreams of being a veterinarian on the family farm, but his father pushes him to start a career as an oenologist. So in 1972, as soon as he graduated in oenology in Conegliano, he found himself in Champagne: " an enlightening journey ", Vezzola declared. Here, in fact, his passion for the world of sparkling wine begins "Effervescence has always been considered a futility in the world of enology, on the contrary I consider it a very serious, complex and fascinating thing ", he says. In the same year, the first "Mattia Vezzola Classic Method" was born, from Chardonnay grapes from Lake Garda. This interest then flourished over the years, leading this farsighted and eclectic winemaker to always experiment with new projects, looking for the perfect bubble. In 1981 Mattia Vezzola met Vittorio Moretti and became enologist at Bellavista, an experience that lasted forty years and ended in 2021 when Vezzola decided to return to his shores of Lake Garda, in Moniga. " One must always try, constantly, to make the best wine by supporting the inclinations that the Eternal Father has given to the territory ", this is the belief that brings Vezzola back home, with the aim of continuing to experiment. Today the "Mattia Vezzola Classic Method" line includes Brut, Brut Rosé, Créant, Grande Annata Brut and Grande Annata Rosé, all coming from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards grown in Valtènesi and on the external moraines of Lake Garda in the foothills. The harvest is strictly manual with selection on the vine, pressing of the whole bunch with exclusive use of the must. Part of the musts ferments in small white oak barrels, in order to give the cuvées length, persistence and longevity. Each cuvée represents the union of at least 40 different wines in order to maintain the same style and sensory profile every year, in addition to the constant quality.

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Classic Method and of the Mattia Vezzola style, a series of celebratory events are planned in the coming months. Even the bottles will dress up for the occasion, as a sticker bearing the inscription "50 years that I love them" on all bottles distributed in 2023.
