Slopes greater than 30%, vineyards located above 500 meters above sea level, and viticulture on terraces and steps. These are the criteria for " heroic viticulture ," defined by the Center for Research, Studies, Safeguarding, Coordination, and Promotion of Mountain Viticulture. These criteria are amply met by 96% of the vineyards in the Cembra Valley , eastern Trentino, where 85% of the vineyards have slopes greater than 30%, 71% are above 500 meters, and 45% are viticulture on terraces and steps.
The first festival dedicated to vertical wines could only have been born here. DoloViniMiti , the name of the event conceived and organized by the Valle di Cembra Tourist Association in collaboration with ApT Fiemme Cembra, now in its third edition , aims to raise awareness of a still little-known but fascinating area through the discovery of its verticality, which characterizes its landscape and wine products.
In the valley's more than 800 hectares of vineyards , painstakingly reclaimed from the steep slopes carved out over millennia by the Avisio River, grapes with distinctive acidity grow, giving wines identity, freshness, and longevity . This is where Müller Thurgau —among the area's most representative varieties— Riesling, Schiava , as well as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grow. Thanks to the attractive altitudes, predominantly porphyry soils, and significant temperature ranges, these grapes also become excellent base wines for the production of Trento DOC sparkling wines .
The event will take place from October 9th to 12th with a series of initiatives open to all . From an in-depth conference on heroic viticulture, which includes a comparison with other regions that boast this unique characteristic, to thematic masterclasses , but also experiential shows , engaging evenings , and vertical treks , some combined with cuisine from Michelin-starred chefs , with tastings and outdoor experiences also in the nearby Val di Fiemme, for a closer contact with the Dolomites , co-protagonists of the event since its name.
Grappa will also be on display, thanks to a collaboration with the Trentino Grappa Protection Institute. A new format will be offered to introduce the public to the fascinating world of distillation and stills, which will be in full swing after the October grape harvest. This is the perfect time to discover their secrets while immersing yourself in the aromas of the pomace being processed and the warm atmosphere this activity generates.
