The Consorzio di Tutela Vini DOC Sicilia (Consortium for the Protection of Sicilian DOC Wines) continues its strong presence at Vinitaly 2026. On the second day of the fair, the denomination's stand in Pavilion 2, Stand G76, came alive with events dedicated to tastings, dialogue between regions, and the education of new generations of winemakers.
The highlight of the day was the masterclass "Sicilia DOC & Asiago DOP: Dialogue between Territories and Cultures of Taste," led by Andrea Amadei, host of the television program È sempre mezzogiorno! and host of Decanter on Rai Radio 2. The event highlighted the encounter between two excellences of the Italian agri-food tradition, creating a sensory journey that showcased the richness and diversity of the regions through carefully selected wine and cheese pairings.
The tasting began with the distinctive sweetness of the Asiago DOP Fresco 20 giorni and Riserva 40 giorni, characterized by delicate hints of fresh milk, yogurt, and butter, paired with the bright, crisp flavors of Sicilian whites Grillo and Lucido. The tasting then continued with a crescendo of aromatic intensity: Asiago DOP Mezzano 6 mesi paired with Nerello Mascalese, an elegant and territorial grape from Etna, culminating in the intensity of the Asiago DOP Vecchio 12 mesi, a perfect match for the structure and personality of Nero d'Avola, one of the symbols of Sicilian winemaking.
The afternoon was dedicated to training and networking with young wine professionals. At 3:00 PM, the Consortium stand hosted a meeting for students of the Viticulture and Oenology degree program at the University of Palermo, entitled "Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC: Origin, Evolution, and Expression of the Terroir."
This in-depth workshop was designed to educate future winemakers on the history and evolution of this iconic grape, which today is increasingly capable of interpreting the island's diverse terroirs in a contemporary way. Through direct discussion and tastings, students explored the many expressions of Nero d'Avola, from traditional to more modern interpretations, understanding the fundamental role of terroir in defining wine style.
The day once again confirmed Vinitaly's role as a platform for dialogue between regions, supply chains, and generations, with the Sicilia DOC leading the way in a story that unites identity, taste culture, and a vision for the future of Sicilian wine.
The Consortium's program will continue in the coming days with new events dedicated to tastings, market exchanges, and the promotion of native grape varieties, ambassadors of Sicily around the world.
