THE ASPARAGUS SEASON HAS BEGUN: IN ROSOLINA (RO) BEN 50 CULTIVAR COMPARISON

In an asparagus of 2,400 square meters, Veneto Agriculture, in its "Po di Tramontana" Center, is carrying out varietal comparisons. An indispensable point of reference for Venetian producers.

Asparagus , one of the main products of the Venetian spring, has always been at the center of the experimentation activities of the Po di Tramontana Center of Veneto Agriculture based in Rosolina (Ro) .

Also this year, on the occasion of the first harvest in the new test field built in 2019, characterized by the presence of numerous cultivars , the heaps for the production of the delicious shoots were formed.

In the 2,400 square meters dedicated to varietal tests, half of the surface is used for testing as many as 28 cultivars - Italian, Dutch and French - for the production of white shoots . In the other half of the plot, on the other hand, 22 other varieties are arranged, coming from the same countries, where the characteristics for the production of green shoots will be evaluated.

We remind you that in Veneto the start of the asparagus harvest takes place between the end of March and the first days of April (much depends on the climatic conditions), operations that generally end in the second fortnight of May.

As for the test field of the "Po di Tramontana" Experimental Center , in the first year of harvest , the period will be much shorter in order not to exploit too much asparagus at the beginning of its production.
