Best Orange Wine, Cecile from Cantina Marilina awarded by the L'Espresso Guide

  • 24/10/2025

Cantina Marilina and the Paternò family were honored at the Teatro Arcimboldi in Milan during the presentation of the guide edited by Luca Gardini, which reviews only 1,000 Italian wines. Cecile 2018 was named Best Orange Wine.

Cecile , Moscato di Noto from Cantina Marilina , is the best orange wine and earns a place of honor in the new edition of the L'Espresso Guide. This historic recognition marks a first for this aromatic variety, representative of southeastern Sicily : it is the first orange wine made from Moscato Bianco to ever receive this prestigious award. Born in the heart of the Val di Noto , Cecile is the fruit of extensive research and experimentation on a grape variety previously relegated to the production of sweet wines and, only recently, also as a dry wine. The winery, a pioneer in promoting maceration on the skins as a tool for identity and culture, has chosen to go against the grain: transforming Moscato into a complex, gastronomic, and elegant orange wine. A wine that also won over Luca Gardini , one of the most authoritative palates of Italian wine critics, who included Cecile 2018 among the 1000 wines of the year and specifically awarded it as Best Orange Wine with the following motivation: " a precious Moscato Bianco in an orange version from the Val di Noto that represents an affirmation of territorial versatility . " Satisfaction from the Paternò family winery and Marilina Paternò : " Cecile changes history and paves the way for a new generation of producers who believe in territoriality, time and the courage to innovate," the producer specifies. " It is a recognition for our entire territory and the Val di Noto, aromatic varieties like our Moscato lend themselves well to maceration." For the Noto winery, this recognition is the fruit of years of work, which has always seen maceration as the starting point for all wines. It plays a central role in Cantina Marilina's winemaking process, which is based on total respect for the raw material and the idea that wine should be an authentic expression of the terroir. Angelo Paternò , winemaker and founder of the winery, has always maintained that everything that can be obtained naturally from grapes should not be forced through external interventions, and for this reason he began working this way in 2004. Maceration is considered an act of respect for the vine and the terroir, a process capable of transmitting to the wine both the primordial strength of nature and the elegance achieved through evolution. Cecile 2018 is the commercially available vintage of the wine recently awarded by the L'Espresso Guide as Best Orange Wine. It was aged for 28 months in 228-liter barriques after an 18-hour maceration and fermentation in barriques. Its label shows a face among the bunches of grapes, evoking the amber colors of the sun and its joyful and promising nature.
