Amaro Guelfo from Brescia was awarded the gold medal at the thirteenth edition of the Concours International de Lyon, held on 24 and 25 March: 1200 selected tasters from all over the world tasted and evaluated 157 categories of liqueurs and distillates , assigning the prestigious prize to the young amaro, which has recently celebrated its first five years of life. Lyon's recognition is only the latest of numerous awards received: Amaro Guelfo was, in fact, twice silver medal at the 2018 Meiningers International Spirits Award ISW and at the 2020 International Taste Award and bronze medal at the London Spirits Competition of 2019; Amaro Guelfo 18, the result of a process that uses an 18-year-old brandy, instead received two bronze medals at the 2020 International Taste Award and at the 2023 World Liquor Awards. Awards that therefore testify to the quality of the products widely also recognized by consumers: since its inception, and despite the pandemic period, the Guelfo Spirits company has in fact never stopped growing and last year it started exporting to the USA, responding to an increasingly intense demand from the of the US market. THE ORIGINS. If Amaro Guelfo was born in 2017, its origins date back to a more distant time: it is in fact the result of the curiosity and creativity of a person passionate about botany, who enjoyed experimenting, mixing herbs and flowers from his garden in the province of Brescia, creating home-made infusions and liqueurs. Guelfo Ronconi's grandchildren and friends – this was his name – started right from his experiments, adding a three-year aged Brandy to over 20 herbs and creating, in fact, an original and unique liqueur. The prevailing flavors are those of sweet and bitter orange, peppermint, licorice and gentian: raw materials that are treated with natural methods and with differentiated techniques based on the result to be obtained. For example, to obtain excellent quality and long-lasting essential oils of sweet, bitter and lemon oranges, the peels are cold pressed and vacuum distilled at low temperatures. Cold pressing is a mechanical process, regulated by a constant temperature, which allows the physical and nutritional characteristics of the herbs and flowers to be kept unaltered, allowing the organoleptic properties to remain intact; vacuum distillation is a thermal separation process that involves a short residence time and a low evaporation temperature, which allows the product to undergo very minimal thermal stress. THE ARTISTIC PROJECT. On the occasion of the proclamation of Brescia and Bergamo as the Italian Capital of Culture 2023, Amaro Guelfo partnered with 12 local artists who dedicated themselves to the creation of 12 original labels, one for each month of the year, printed on 144 numbered bottles and sign. The project is entitled “Amaro Guelfo 12x12 Art Collection” and the April label is the work of Laura Pedizzi, a young figurative artist from Brescia, who places female subjects at the center of her creations.
