110th harvest for Bava: the historic winery of Cocconato (Asti) was founded in 1911

  • 28/09/2021

THE 90 YEARS OF PIERO BAVA, PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY AND "PATRIARCH OF BARBERA", ARE ALSO CELEBRATED

Who, in the next few years, will taste one of the Bava wines of the 2021 harvest, will find in the glass a Barbera, a Nizza or a Barolo that contains and expresses over a century of winemaking experience. Because almost never a wine is the result of a single harvest, but it tells the whole story of those who thought of that wine, produced it, brought it to the table.

110: there are so many harvests of the Bava family since Giuseppe Bava inaugurated the hotel with restaurant, ballroom and cellar in Cocconato. The building stood right next to the Asti - Chivasso railway line that was being built in the hills of the Asti area, a few steps from the station: shortly thereafter, the railway would allow easier transport and trade on the Turin route, favoring exchanges and dating.

It was 1911.

This year Bava reaches a new milestone as a historic company. At the head of the winery is the founder's grandson, Piero Bava, 90 years old in September . Recognized in 2016 as one of the "Patriarchs of Barbera" , Piero celebrates his birthday together with the winery: he set foot in the building when he was only a few months old and still carries on the family tradition with his sons Roberto, Giulio and Paolo. and the grandchildren, Francesca and Giorgio . Three different generations working side by side to offer, on over 50 markets around the world, wines that speak of Piedmont, of authenticity, sustainability, respect for the territory, rooted family values and hospitality, passion and taste.

In 110 years, history has been made: a style is drawn and defined - in the vineyard, in the cellar -, it goes around the world many times between meetings, tastings, toasts in all languages.

There are dozens and dozens of menus created by Roberto Bava for his legendary wine dinners that have touched all five continents. Today, hanging on the cellar walls, they represent the tangible sign of Bava's creativity and history.

The vineyards owned by the family have extended over the years from Monferrato to the Langa da Barolo (today 50 hectares, alternating with 20 hectares of woods, hazelnut groves and lawns to preserve biodiversity). The techniques have gradually been renewed, the ideas have never been lacking. The production has expanded over the years: the Bava labels are now 14, and represent an important enological cross-section of this corner of Piedmont.

The first love remains Barbera , starting from the expression of the most identifying wine, which is the Stradivario, a precious Barbera d'Asti Superiore with long aging times.

Libera, a steel-only Barbera d'Asti, and the Nizza Docg Pianoalto are born from the vineyards of Agliano. Viva in bottle, sparkling Barbera del Monferrato, is a traditional Monferrato wine that combines the elegance of the production style of wines refermented in the bottle with the authentic tradition of Piedmont.

In the scenic Vigna della Pieve in Cocconato , in addition to Stradivario, the grapes for Thou Bianc, surprising Piedmontese Chardonnay, Sauvignon Relais Bianc and Albarossa are produced.

From the farmhouse of Castiglione Falletto in the Langhe , in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Scarrone cru , the Barolo Docg Bava and the Langhe Nebbiolo are born.

Always in the Bava tradition, the aromatics of Piedmont: in particular Malvasia, (Rosetta and Malvasia Rosé), Moscato d'Asti and Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato.

EVENTS - A guided tour dedicated to the history of the company in the Bava cellars will be inaugurated in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, on the company's institutional social channels, the journey into Bava history has already begun a few months ago among vintage photos, memories and stories with the hashtag # bava110.
