Italian wines Sardegna

According to the testimonies arrived to us, vine comes in Sardinia thanks to the Phoenician people. Only during the Carthaginian domination we have the certainty of the actual production of wine. With the arrival of the Punics we witness the first standstill of the viticulture: Sardinia had to be the granary of Carthage, then all the fruit trees, including vines, were cut. In Roman times, an attempt to restore vineyards is dampened by the fact that the region, now used as a barn, retained this function. With the multiplication of the Roman colonies on the island it is realized that to import wine from the peninsula is not economical, so it is decided to intensify the production of wine within the region. Viticulture and winemaking become integral part of the life and culture of the island (there are many statues erected to Bacchus and Dionysus), and with the passing of centuries and the development of cultivation techniques laws protecting the vines are enacted, which included corporal punishment for those who even minimally damaged the vineyards. Always during this period, business begins with both with Italy and foreign countries.


In the eighteenth century the production of the wine experiences a turn thanks to the experiments taking place in the Royal School of Enology in Cagliari: different types of wine begin to be produced, grapes from different vineyards are blended and quality becomes the aim.


At the end of the nineteenth century a catastrophe is experienced: relations with France collapse because of the Italian protectionist policy, and the invasion of phylloxera decimates vineyards. The advent of the World Wars marks the final collapse of viticulture, that is able to resume floridly only in the Seventies.


To date, Sardinia is able to produce highly original and quality wines. Most of the vineyards are planted with Cannonau, Carignano and Vermentino.
