Italian wines Molise

The history of agriculture (and then of winemaking) of this region is relatively modern, as only at the end of World War II Abruzzo and Molise were separated. Despite being one of the smallest regions in Italy, the climate within is various, and this has a great influence on its vineyards and on the grape varieties to grow. In addition to the climate, the mineral composition of the soil and the scents of the sea that tangle with the scents of the mountains make many different trials possible and a stimulate the future of oenology. This clashes with a dispersive business situation that should be corrected and reformed (the winemaking companies are many and very small, therefore it is very difficult to rationalise the plants and make products marketable).


In spite of the problems over described, Molise has a relative weight in the national oenology, but owns some treasures that are not very known but of great interest. The most cultivated grapes are Trebbiano tosano, Greco, Falanghina and Bombino for the white grape varieties, while Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Aglianico and Tintilia divide their production from red grapes. The most widespread denomination is Biferno Rosso, while Tintilia, especially in the high hills, ages very well.
