Oltrepò Wines Experience: masterclass and tasting at Palazzo Brancaccio to enhance the versatility and style of the Oltrepò Pavese denominations

Oltrepò Wines Experience with masterclass and tasting, in Rome, proved to be a highly successful event, which involved over 38 companies representing the Oltrepò Pavese Denominations.

The magnificent tasting in the garden of Palazzo Brancaccio saw over 300 operators register, 40 seminarians for the two guided tastings in the halls of Palazzo Brancaccio.

The Oltrepò Wines Experience event, born from the collaboration between Gambero Rosso and the Consorzio di Tutela Vini Oltrepò Pavese, was dedicated to Oltrepò Pavese, one of the most interesting wine-producing areas in Northern Italy. The appointment, which took place on 26 June 2023, in the magnificent setting of Palazzo Brancaccio, was an opportunity to rediscover the denominations of this area, through two masterclasses reserved for sector operators and led by Lorenzo Ruggeri, deputy editor of the Vini guide d'Italia by Gambero Rosso and a great tasting at tasting tables open to all enthusiasts who were able to taste the Oltrepò Pavese producers and their most representative labels. The activity was carried out with the contribution of MASAF , pursuant to directorial decree n. 553922 of 28 October 2022 (see par. 3.3 of attachment D to dd 302355 of 7 July 2022).

Lorenzo Ruggeri, who conducted the two masterclasses of the Oltrepò Wines Experience event in Rome, Palazzo Brancaccio, one dedicated to wines from native vines and the other to wines from historic vines, commented on the experience of the two seminars as follows : it concerns the autochthonous vines, what impressed me is how the historic and reserve types are proposed today with an increasingly contemporary style .

Ruggeri said: These are wines that are basically powerful and rich in structure, because there are varieties behind them that have these characteristics, but in which there is always an elegant stylistic code of drinkability, where we find the territory but there is also a dimension of today's taste , and I must say that we found this aspect not only in the reserve but also on Italian Riesling and then on the Rhine, therefore a very elegant and clean style . Lorenzo Ruggeri continues: We tasted gastronomic wines as in the case of the two Bonarda obviously proposed with a richer style, coming from two old vineyards, but well explanatory of what a local Bonarda can give from a suitable area and with great interpreters . These are wines, not only for the table in the most classic sense but also for aging .

Then the second masterclass: Practically dedicated to Pinot noir, with the exception of that Riesling from the Rhine to act as a watershed – it was a tasting that highlighted the growth of the classic method, of the DOCG, and of Pinot noir with many styles and producers interpret it and several examples of parcels that are finding important feedback. The growth of the Docg is also counterbalanced by that of Pinot Noir in red which is finally increasingly in focus .

A question of style: In my opinion, we tasted three styles that were very well representative of the stylistic composition of Oltrepò Pavese in red because one was "only steel" therefore with all the drinkability and with a rich stalk to find a bit of character, then a reserve that was truly exemplary with savory notes from the sub production areas and then the last one – a Rocca de Giorgi cru – with Bertone della Valle Scuropasso, a demonstration that when you go to select the single parcel you get great results. In closing: Very good feedback also emerged when speaking with the journalists present: everyone agrees that a qualitative level has now been reached that can no longer be hidden . In short, for the Oltrepò Pavese it is no longer just a question of value for money, it offers wines that compete with all the Italian denominations, wines that can also have a good international flavor and the team spirit that was breathed in Palazzo Brancaccio was beautiful: almost 40 compact wineries that present themselves in Rome, team up, and that's exactly what the area needs. Go on like this!.
